Costa Rica honeymoon guide
Volcano hot springs, cloud forest, sloths and Pacific sunsets — the adventure-meets-romance honeymoon, with the real costs and the routes that work.

A 9-night Costa Rica honeymoon costs about $5,500 for two at mid-range hotels including US flights, around $3,200 on a budget, and $12,000+ at luxury eco-lodges. Visit December to April for dry weather, and split the trip between a volcano area (Arenal) and a beach (Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio). Drive times are longer than maps suggest, so keep it to two or three bases.
How much does a Costa Rica honeymoon cost?
Costa Rica is short-haul for US couples and offers luxury at Central American prices, though it's pricier than its neighbours. A realistic 9-night breakdown for two:
| Tier | Flights | Stay (per night) | Food & drink | Extras | 7-night total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget (boutique cabinas) | $450 pp | $110/night | $45/day pp | $600 (tours, shuttles) | ~$3,200 / couple |
| Mid-range (boutique hotels) | $550 pp | $260/night | $75/day pp | $1,100 (car, tours, hot springs) | ~$5,500 / couple |
| Premium (design eco-lodges) | $650 pp | $550/night | $110/day pp | $1,600 (private guides) | ~$9,000 / couple |
| Luxury (Papagayo / Arenal resorts) | $1,300 pp business | $900/night | $160/day pp | $2,200 (domestic flights, spa) | ~$12,000+ / couple |
Hotel rates usually add 13% tax. A 4x4 rental runs $60–$110/day with mandatory local insurance; short domestic flights save half a day of driving between regions.
Costs are researched estimates for two travellers and move with season and demand. Compare against our full honeymoon cost guide.

Best time to honeymoon in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has a dry season and a 'green' (rainy) season, and the Caribbean coast follows a different pattern.
- December – April — Dry season and peak demand. Sunny beaches; book 6+ months ahead, especially for holidays.
- May – June — Green season begins: sunny mornings, afternoon showers, lush scenery and lower rates.
- July – August — A short drier spell ('veranillo') with green-season prices — a great value window.
- September – October — Wettest on the Pacific side and some roads close. The Caribbean coast is often at its driest.
- November — Transition month: rain tapering off, lush and quieter before the holiday rush.

A guided night walk reveals frogs, sloths and tarantulas you'd never spot alone.

How to book a Costa Rica honeymoon
- Fly into Liberia for Guanacaste. Liberia (LIR) is closest to the north Pacific beaches and Arenal; San José (SJO) suits Manuel Antonio.
- Limit yourself to two or three bases. Mountain roads are slow — 100 miles can take 3–4 hours.
- Rent a 4x4 or book shuttles. Many lodges are up rough roads; shared shuttles are an easy alternative.
- Book a guide for wildlife. Guides with spotting scopes find far more animals than you will alone.
- Mention your honeymoon. Boutique lodges often add a romantic dinner or room upgrade.
